"I was actually watching the news yesterday and it showed up on the news and my jaw just dropped, not something I would have expected," a woman told us tonight who is a former co-worker of Thomas J. West, the former daycare worker charged with possessing child pornography.

"He had a lot of spunk, had a lot of positive energy, you never really saw him down," she said.

But that image of a caregiver seems to contrast with recent charges against West for possessing child pornography, and the allegations that started it all.

"On June 8th, Altoona police received information that a four year old was touched inappropriately by Thomas J. West," said Altoona Police Chief, James Small, at a news conference Tuesday.

It is a situation hard for adults to comprehend. For kids, she says, it is even tougher.

"Little kids don't quite understand when a teacher's not there, and he seemed to have a big impact on the way he taught kids," the former co-worker added.

She said he seemed to care about kids and their parents.

"Everytime a parent picked their child up from daycare, he would go over and talk about what they did that day and what was going on," she added.

A parent herself, she worries about who watches her kids and knows other parents feel the same. She says it all comes down to trust.

"At the same time you don't want to wonder too much because they have to be cared for, so you just have to trust the teacher's that are watching your children," she said.
