(WEAU) - What used to be a temporary fix to revitalize the downtown area has now been removed from public eye, and the biggest question is, where are these murals?

“We've actually stored them in a garage that the city owns so we can keep them out of the elements and keep them safe for the time being,” said Economic Development Director, Mike Schatz.

Now the city is trying to come up with ideas with the help of the public on where the new home for these murals will be.

“Some of them revolve around the possible reconstruction of the Barstow Street, maybe putting them in the alleys during the reconstruction, because some of the businesses will probably utilize the alley, “said Schatz.

The subcommittee hasn't met with businesses to discuss that and is still throwing around the idea of an auction to try and sell the murals.

“It's a great chance for people to relate to a piece of art, it was just put on a run down building, people want those to stick around, said subcommittee member Ben Richgruber.

“We’re very appreciative of the time and the effort that the artists put into it, it really made 2. South Barstow a destination, said Schatz.

Meanwhile construction on the building, owned by John Mogenson, has already begun.

“We’re going to lower all the windows, so you have a nice view of the river, and I think it's a beautiful spot where the rivers come together,” said the bricklayer, Guy Patrow.

“There's a real desire to be downtown. People want to be here. Any additional people we can get living down here just help keep that buzz alive,” said Richgruber.
