ELLSWORTH, Wis. (WEAU) – A gas leak forced several evacuations and shut down a stretch of a rural road on Monday.
It happened around 11 a.m. at the corner of 803rd Street and 147th Avenue, southwest of Ellsworth. The Pierce County Sheriff’s Department says a municipal worker was using a tractor with an auger-type post hole digger to replace a broken stop sign post. The machine hit a natural gas line. Crews responded and saw vapors shooting out of the ground when they got there.
People within a one-block radius of the leak were evacuated as a precautionary measure. Crews also shut down part of 150th avenue. A gas company that responded to the scene fixed the leak in about 90 minutes, and the evacuees were let back into their homes.
