CHIPPEWA COUNTY (WEAU) - Crews have evacuated the site of the EOG sand plant construction site in Chippewa County after someone dug up a gas main.

Chippewa Falls Fire Chief Tom Larson says it happened around noon Wednesday.

He says Xcel Energy responded and capped off the main about 10 minutes after it happened.

Jon Taylor with the Chippewa Falls Fire Department says a crew was digging on the site, and cut a hole in a four-inch plastic main, releasing natural gas in the area. He says a strong breeze helped to push the gas away. He did not know how many people were evacuated.

The department checked the area for a concentration of gas, and didn't find any. Crews returned to the site and started work again just after 12:20 p.m.

Nobody was injured, and nobody in the surrounding area was evacuated.
