Goodwill continues low prices and giving back to community

(WEAU) - "At Goodwill we like to put people first," said Karen Enestvedt of Goodwill.

While Goodwill may be known for its reasonable prices, it does more than that.

"What we try to do is offer high quality products at low prices, so you can afford them you can come out and get a whole new wardrobe and its not going to bankrupt you," said Enestvedt.

Goodwill also provides 25 programs and services for the surrounding area and the GoodNeighbor Initiative is one of them.
It gives 25 dollar vouchers to different agencies in the area.

Apple Pregnancy Care Center says over the past 12 years its given 900 dollars worth of goodwill vouchers.

"The last time we used it, it was a family that had a fire and really honestly didn't have clothes to wear the next day," said Melinda Gardner of Apple Pregnancy Care Center.

The Aids Resource Center of Wisconsin says it's given to its client more than half of the vouchers that Goodwill provided this year.

"A few situations we've given them away for is somebody who left an abusive household and just had to walk away from everything," said Sheryl Thiede, the Executive Director of the ARCW.

Goodwill also helps "at risk" adults and youth receive High School Equivalency Diplomas. We talked with one of the teacher’s who says a past student told her how he felt after receiving the education.

"To come from a place where no one believed in me and everyone expected the worse, to be able to live my dream and that’s what makes it all worth while," said Lisa Hurst of Goodwill Industries in a phone interview.

Goodwill also helps the environment by accepting donations that may not end up on their shelves.

"We have a variety of different salvage programs like rigid plastics and heavy metals will recycle those so their not going to into a landfill," said Enestvedt.
