Governor leaving closing decision to local school districts

MADISON, Wis.(WEAU) -- School administrators across Wisconsin are weighing whether to cancel classes for Monday. The coldest air of the season is predicted for Sunday night through Tuesday.

Governor Scott Walker's Press Secretary issued a statement in regards to Wisconsin schools:

"Our top priority in this situation is the safety of Wisconsin's school children, and while this has most commonly been an issue for individual districts to decide, Governor Walker will consider this option and continue to closely monitor the situation with the appropriate state agencies."

Later in the afternoon the governor's office backed off of that position saying the governor is encouraging local school districts and governments to make their own decisions.

In Minnesota, Gov. Mark Dayton says all public schools statewide would be closed Monday.
