Granton man hit with environmental fine

MADISON, Wis. (RELEASE) -- Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen announced today that his office has obtained a criminal judgment against Billy J. Dahlke of Granton for violating Wisconsin's waste water laws. On November 21, 2012, Mr. Dahlke pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor count of willfully discharging septage into an unnamed tributary stream of Jack Creek, on March 20, 2012, without a permit issued by the Department of Natural Resources (DNR). On November 21, 2013, Mr. Dahlke was sentenced by the Honorable Jon Counsell, Clark County Circuit Court Judge, to pay fines and costs totaling $29,995.80.

The investigation of Mr. Dahlke began when the DNR received an anonymous complaint through the DNR hotline on March 19, 2012. The complainant indicated that a truck from Dahlke's business, BJ Septic, had been dumping numerous loads of liquid septic waste behind an abandoned farm located on US Hwy 10 in Granton. DNR wardens established surveillance of the property the next day and observed Dahlke discharging septage from his truck into a tank that immediately drained and flowed into a nearby tributary to Jack Creek. Dahlke is licensed by the DNR to perform septage servicing and land spreading on agricultural lands but this dumping was not an approved method or on a permitted site.
