HEAT WAVE 2012: Cars suffer in heat

(WEAU) – The owner of Adam’s Automotive Center says he has seen more cars come in with heat related problems.

"It’s extremely hot, I feel like I'm in a sauna," said Sou Lee who lives in Eau Claire.

21- year old Sou Lee was on his way back from a friends travelling on I-94 when his accelerator gave out and so did his air-conditioning.

"I couldn't accelerate. It started slowing down, so I had to move it over to the side of the road right away," said Lee.

"People think that cold weather is the toughest thing on the battery. The fact of the matter is the heat is what really destroys the battery," said Bob Adams, Adams Automotive Center owner.

Bob Adams owner of Adams Automotive Center says people have to pay attention to things like car batteries because coolant fans and air conditioning run off of the battery.

"When the weather gets like this or even close to marginal, it will fail. The best thing to do is make sure that's tested," said Adams.

Adams also says tires can wear down when travelling on hot cement and gas tanks should be monitored as well.

"In order to keep that fuel pump motor cool and lubricated, its best to ride around on the top of the tank," said Adams.

Meanwhile the age of Lee’s battery caused the accelerator to give out. Lee says sitting in the hot car waiting for a tow truck was unbearable.

"It was really bad, I was joking how we would probably die before the tow truck gets there, we were burning up inside my car," said Lee.

Adams says if you have a problem with your car, you should bring it in right away, especially because of the heat.
