Hand sanitizer taken from porta-a-potties

LA CROSSE, Wis. (WEAU) -- Hand sanitizer is disappearing out of port-a-potties in city parks.

And a Western Wisconsin police department is asking for your help to find the person or people responsible.

It’s a crime you wouldn’t expect, in a place you wouldn’t expect.

“They would lift the lid, and remove the bag, and so I thought odd. Does somebody want free hand sanitizer or what?” said La Crosse Parks and Recreation Superintendent Gar Amunson.

Hand sanitizer was disappearing from port-a-potties in La Crosse city parks.

The company told the city it has been happening for a couple of weeks

“We believe that we’re they’re either using it, drinking it straight up, or they dilute it to get the alcohol out of there,” said Lt. Patrick Hogan.

“I couldn’t believe it. I first of all can’t imagine drinking hand sanitizer, and I can’t imagine what effects that would have on your body,” said Amunson.

Gundersen Health System said people should never try to drink it for the alcohol, and if they do, they can get alcohol poisoning or damage their nervous system and other organs.

“There’s a lot more alcohol in that small bag than people are used to ingesting where they’re drinking alcoholic beverages,” said Gundersen Health System Infection Control Bridget Pfaff,

So to stop the problem, Parks and Rec said its port-a-potty company has switched to a hand sanitizer that isn’t alocohol based.

So far, police don’t have any suspects.

If you have any information, call the La Crosse Police Department or Crime Stoppers.
