Hardware stores working to meet demand for salt, shovels and roof rakes

EAU CLAIRE, Wis (WEAU)- Because this winter has been so snowy and cold, local hardware stores say when it comes to digging out of this storm some important supplies might be harder to come by.

“I was looking for one of the big ice scrapers and they are all sold out,” Misty Plemon-Holstien said.

Plemon-Holstien says she was looking for an ice scraper at Walgreens but instead found empty shelves Thursday night.

“A lot of things are out and I can't get them anymore but as long as I can get some product to do the service we will have it,” Tom Thompson with the True Value on Clairemont Ave. in Eau Claire said.

Thompson says his store orders winter supplies months in advance, and they plan for a longer than expected winter when they order.

“Every year you have a different requirement because of the weather. Our salt, shovels and our roof rakes we order multiple times through the winter time because of the demand,” Thompson said.

The aisles of shovels and salt are still stocked at the True Value but the one item they are running out of is roof rakes they've had such a high demand they've had to start a waiting list.

It’s the same story at other hardware stores in Eau Claire. Both the Hardware Hank and the Ace Hardware say they are out of roof rakes and have started waiting lists.
