Health groups oppose bill barring gun inquiries

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- Health organizations say a Wisconsin bill that would prohibit doctors from asking patients whether they own guns would interfere with the doctor-patient relationship.

A Wisconsin State Journal report says the bill was proposed last week by Republican Rep. Michael Schraa. He says the decision to own a firearm is a personal one, and that patients shouldn't be subject to harassment from physicians.

But health organizations say the measure interferes with a doctor's ability to educate patients about firearm safety.

University of Wisconsin Health pediatrician Dipesh Navsaria says asking about gun ownership is routine. He says it's no different than asking about other safety measures such as car seats and bike helmets.

Doctors who violated the ban could face a $25,000 fine or nine months in prison.
