LA CROSSE COUNTY, Wis. (WEAU) -- An area high school student is literally going the distance to help fight hunger.

Kyle, who will be a senior at West Salem High School, is running 101 miles to raise funds and awareness about hunger.

"I know hunger is prominent in our community, and it's pretty essential for every day life. Without food you can't survive," said Kyle.

Kyle is doing the run for his senior exit project, which is required to graduate.

He's used to running, since he's on the cross country and track teams, but he says a run like this isn't just about endurance.

"A lot of it is going to be mental. Just hang through it, and I'll be alright,” said Kyle.

Kyle is raising money for WAFER and The Hunger Task Force of La Crosse.

His goal is to raise at least $100 per mile."

"My first reaction was are you crazy?” said Kyle’s mom Cheryl.

Cheryl said Kyle has always wanted to help others.

"This is a great way for him to do that with his love for running,” said Cheryl.

On Monday, Kyle ran from Marshland to Sparta.

It's about 47 miles.

Kyle will finish the final stretch of his run from Sparta to Reedsburg on Tuesday.

It's about 54 miles.
