WAUSAU, Wis. (WEAU) -- A couple lost their home in a fire Christmas morning.

It happened around 2 a.m. Wednesday on Pelsdorf Avenue near Owen. Owen-Withee-Curtis Fire District Chief Mark Renderman told WSAW-TV that a middle-aged couple escaped with minor scratches and bumps. Renderman says working smoke and heat detectors went off, alerting the couple, and may have saved their lives. The home was destroyed in the fire, which Renderman described as fast-moving. The American Red Cross is helping the victims. There's no word on what caused the fire.

Renderman says this is the first time he's fought a fire on Christmas Day.
