EAU CLAIRE, Wis-- Home sweet home, it's a place that you can't wait to get to after a long day at work. But for many people in the community, it’s a struggle to afford a home.
"People just can't afford what they used to afford whether it means they lost jobs or took a pay cut," said Eau Claire Housing Authority Executive Director Keith Jonathan said.
Jonathan says there are 642 families on their waiting list to get housing assistance.
But with less funding the Housing Authority says it is becoming more difficult to meet that need.
“The issue that we face is that we need to do the same work, if not more work, with less funding,” said Jonathan.
In the last two years, the Housing Authority has lost around $262,000 just in their housing voucher program.
"In 2014 we will be funded at only 89 percent of what we were funded in 2013, said Jonathan.
Keith says continued loss in funding makes it difficult to help families in need.
Eau Claire Housing Authority has 111 homes and two apartment complexes that they operate. They also run a voucher program to help with rent payments. People participating in the voucher program are asked to pay 30 percent of their income toward rent.
