SCANDIA, Minn. (AP) -- A Minnesota sheriff's commander is out of the hospital after he was shot while scouting a turkey-hunting spot in Wisconsin.

Cmdr. Jerry Cusick of the Washington County sheriff's office was taken to Regions Hospital in St. Paul Tuesday after receiving a shotgun blast to the head, neck and shoulder.

Cusick tells the St. Paul Pioneer Press more than 50 pellets pierced his skin and will not be removed. He will have to have surgery for a pellet lodged behind one of his eyes.

Authorities say Cusick was unarmed when a turkey hunter mistook him for a turkey and shot him in the town of Somerset, Wis.

Cusick says he still hopes to hunt this season and plans to go back to work next week.

The shooting remains under investigation.

SOMERSET, Wis. (WEAU)--An off-duty sheriff's commander was shot in the face while scouting a hunting spot in St. Croix County. It happened near Somerset around 7:30 Tuesday morning.

Deputies say Commander Jerry Cusick was with Anthony Carderelli of White Bear Lake, Minnesota, when Carderelli shot Cusick in the head, face and neck area with a single shot using a long-barreled shotgun. Cusick was taken to the hospital and is listed in good condition.

Sheriff John Shilts says there is no information that shows Carderelli intentionally shot Cusick but the shooting is still under investigation.
Cusick is a Sheriff's Commander in Washington County, Minnesota.

HUDSON, Wis. (AP) -- An off-duty sheriff's commander has been shot while scouting a hunting spot in St. Croix County.

Sheriff's officials in Washington Co., Minn., say Cmdr. Jerry Cusick was shot once with a long-barreled shotgun in the town of Somerset Tuesday about 7:30 a.m. by another hunter.

Cusick was taken to Regions Hospital in St. Paul, Minn., where he is in good condition. Sheriff Bill Hutton says Cusick was not armed when he was shot. The shooting is under investigation.

Deputies responded to a report of a person shot in the 1900 block of 80th street, near Somerset, around 7:30 Tuesday morning.

The St. Croix County Sheriff's Department believes the hunters were turkey hunting in the area when one of them shot the other. Cusick was taken to Regions Hospital in St. Paul with unknown injuries.

The Sheriff's Department is investigating the shooting, along with the Department of Natural Resources.
