NEW INFORMATION: Name released of inmate who died in Buffalo County

ALMA, Wis. (WEAU) -- UPDATE: The Buffalo County Sheriff's Department has released the name of the inmate who died at a hospital. He is 21-year-old Kelly D. Johnson.

The sheriff's department says it appears Johnson took his own life. On February 3rd, staff at the jail were doing a routine check when they found Johnson unresponsive in his cell. He was taken to the hospital and was pronounced dead later in the afternoon. His death is still under investigation.

ALMA, Wis. (WEAU) --A sheriff's office is reviewing the death of an inmate who appears to have taken his own life.

Staff at the Buffalo County Jail was doing a routine check of inmates on Monday afternoon. That's when they found a 21-year-old man unresponsive in his cell. He was taken to the hospital. The man was pronounced dead later in the afternoon. A news release from the Buffalo County Sheriff's Office does not include the name of the man, but says he once lived in Pierce County.

The sheriff's office has asked another law enforcement agency to do an audit on the procedures at the jail. An autopsy is pending.
