Inmate escapes and leads deputies on chase

WHITEHALL, Wis. (WEAU) -- On Friday, January 10th, it was reported at a male inmate had escaped from the Trempealeau County Health Care Center by jumping out a second story window.

He has been identified as 31-year-old Michael Leavitt.

He was spotted at the Kwik Trip in Whitehall, shortly before stealing a vehicle that was parked running in front of the gas station.

Leavitt lead deputies on a short low-speed chase before they got the vehicle to stop on HWY 53, south of Blair.

He was taken into custody without incident.

Shortly after, he was taken to the Gundersen Tri-County Hospital in Whitehall and treated for a minor injury before returning to the Trempealeau County Health Care Center.
