Investigation on the fire that destroyed funeral home in West Allis continues

WEST ALLIS, Wis. (AP) -- Authorities are investigating the cause of a fire that destroyed a funeral home in West Allis.

The fire broke out Friday night at the Schramka-Borgwardt Funeral Home. Firefighters say that by the time crews arrived, the blaze was shooting through the roof.

Officials say no one was inside at the time, and that three bodies in the funeral home were in refrigeration and not harmed. Lisa Marshall, a spokeswoman for the funeral home, said their families were notified that the three bodies were transferred to other facilities. She said their services would not be disrupted.

West Allis Assistant Fire Chief Gary Streicher says the fire may have started around the stack of the crematorium, but the investigation was continuing. Damage to the 88-year-old building was estimated at $250,000.
