PRAIRIE DU CHIEN, Wis. (WEAU) -- A sheriff's department is investigating an apparent murder-suicide.

The Crawford County Department responded to a report of an unresponsive man laying in his driveway on County Road X in the Town of Clayton Monday afternoon. That's northeast of Prairie du Chien. Deputies found a 70-year-old man dead of a gunshot wound when they got there. They searched the house, and found the man's 68-year-old wife also dead of a gunshot wound. Sheriff Dale McCullick says it appears the man shot and killed his wife inside the home, and then went outside and took his own life. He says investigators are trying to find out why it happened.

No names have been released. Autopsies are being performed on Tuesday. Sheriff McCullick says the last time the department responded to the home was in 2008, and that his department has never responded to a domestic incident there.
