Is it better to graduate college in the spring or winter?

EAU CLAIRE, WIS. (WEAU) -- "I've been looking into working for the forestry service or getting an internship in Washington D.C. or Madison," said David Alger, a UWEC student graduating this December.

But in his last couple weeks of school, the history major is not focusing as much on the past, as he is on the future. Hoping to get a job.

"Basically anything where I can apply my degree and start making some money," he said.

But as a winter grad, he says the jobs he is looking at might be harder to get.

"I think there's much more demand in the summer than there would be in the winter," he said.

"We tend to see more hiring around summer," said Scott Hodek, an Economist with the Department of Workforce Development.

Hodek says that is a trend with a lot of seasonal jobs. But office jobs, manufacturing, and tech jobs stay consistent year round.

Still, there are some factors that may help summer graduates.

"If you've graduate the summer then you have that part time job to float you while you're looking for your full-time," he added.

He also says there are more part-time jobs available in the summer. He also says people may be taking vacations around the holidays, the time when students may be waiting on hiring decisions.

But Hodek says he was a winter grad too and found his way in by starting part-time.

"I was temping, and I just happened to take a job with that employer," he added.

We did reach out to UWEC and CVTC and asked if their students had better luck getting jobs in the spring over the winter. They tell us they were not able to provide that information because their employment surveys are taken by students one time per year.
