LA CROSSE, Wis. (WEAU) Two new positions have been added to an area police department to help increase safety in the community.

With help from Mayo Clinic Health System, Franciscan Healthcare and Viterbo University, the La Crosse Police Department has created two positions for a new community policing program in the city's Washburn neighborhood.

The department says community policing officers have been successful in other communities across the country.

Mayor Tim Kabat says the two will have a strong, positive and visible role in the neighborhood.

He says the program is funded through 2016.
