LADYSMITH, Wis. (WEAU) A 38 year old Ladysmith man is in custody, after barricading himself inside his home when officers arrived for a welfare check.

Police Chief Allen Lobermeier says the man made statements concerning his safety, and the safety of others. When officers tried to talk to him, he didn't respond.

The area around his home, which is located at 620 East 10th Street South in Ladysmith, was secured off. Due to safety concerns, police asked Ladysmith Elementary School and Ladysmith Middle School to keep students inside.

The Barron County Emergency Response Team repeatedly tried to make contact with the man, to get him to come outside so he could be evaluated by the mental health staff.

After several hours, tear gas was deployed inside the man's home.

At around 4:30 pm, he was taken into custody and was transported to Rusk County Memorial Hospital for evaluation.
