Lake Hallie Police Press Release

On December 8, 2010, the Village of Lake Hallie was formally notified that they have received a Traffic Safety Grant for the Federal fiscal year effective now and ending September 2011.

According to the release from the Bureau of Transportation Statistics, “an analysis of all alcohol and speed-related crash data from the three previous years for every jurisdiction in Wisconsin were analyzed. Considered were those accidents involving property damage through all ranges of injuries to those that resulted in death. This data was scientifically weighed, following established statistical protocol. From this work, the Bureau identified those places in Wisconsin with the largest number of crashes due to excess alcohol use or speed. Upon factoring in each location's population density, a snapshot of the state's most likely places for similar crashes per capita was established.” The State determined that the Village of Lake Hallie was a likely place for those types of accidents. In 2009, Lake Hallie Officers responded to 279 traffic accidents and so far this year (2010 excluding December) 252 traffic accidents.

The grant award allows the Village of Lake Hallie to be eligible for $10,000 in funds for overtime and $5,000 for the purchase of equipment for the total grant of $15,000. As part of the grant, Lake Hallie Police must participate in “Highly Visible Enforcement” which is referred to as “Saturation Patrol”. The grant “work plan” requires 20 traffic deployments that will involve no less than 3 police units during each deployment. An approximate total of 345 hours have been planned for these deployments.

The Village participated with a similar type of Highway Grant in 2010. During the last grant (2010), the Village purchased three RADAR units. These types of grants have greatly enhanced our department’s ability to address traffic related issues by increasing traffic enforcement along with the purchase of needed equipment. The police department consists of 7 full-time and 6 part-time police officers. As a result, less than 50% of the time only one officer is on duty.

During the 2010 grant, the Village of Lake Hallie issued 350 traffic (grant) related citations which accounted for approximately 30% of total traffic related citations issued by the Village of Lake Hallie in 2010. The Department of Administration 2009 population estimate for Lake Hallie is 6,463 people.
