Law Enforcement Torch Run raises money for Special Olympics

(WEAU) - It was the final leg of a big fundraiser for local athletes.

Thursday was the final leg of the Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics around the state, including here in Eau Claire and Chippewa Falls. Officers from Eau Claire, Chippewa Falls, Stanley and Bloomer met up at Allen Park in Chippewa Falls for a parade through the downtown area, and ended at the Leinie Lodge for a party.

The fundraiser leads up to the State Summer Games for Special Olympics, which begin Thursday in Stevens Point.

One of the bikers today said it doesn't just raise money, but is also a fun way to meet up with other law enforcement officers. Tim Nelson, Deputy Warden with the Chippewa Valley Corrections Facility, said "it's going well. We've got a lot of camaraderie, meeting some folks in our business and our profession and having fun."

Since 1986, the Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics Wisconsin has raised more than $17 million.
