(WEAU) - It was a somber morning at the Florian Gardens in Eau Claire, as officers honored those who have been killed in the line of duty.
It was the Northwest Wisconsin Regional Law Enforcement Memorial Ceremony. The ceremony includes a vehicle procession, a formal honor guard presentation, wreath laying, and a rifle team salute.
Chief Eric Atkinson of the Menomonie Police Department said "it is the memory of those officers and the sacrifices their families have made, that serve as the motivation for all of us to help make our communities safe when we put on that badge and gun."
The ceremony is held each year during national police week and currently honors the memory of 48 law enforcement officers from 20 northwestern Wisconsin counties who paid the ultimate price.
