Memorial ceremony honors fallen officers

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (WEAU) -- The Northwest Wisconsin Regional Law Enforcement Memorial was held at the Florian Gardens to honor those who've given the ultimate sacrifice.

A vehicle procession traveled from Chippewa Valley Technical College, along Clairemont and Highway 93 to the Gardens this morning; that's where law enforcement officers gathered to remember the bravery of those who lost their lives in the line of duty and to honor those that continue to serve.

Boyceville Fire Chief, Dan Wellumson who was the master of ceremonies at the event, says the event’s purpose is essential. Wellumson say, “I think it's so very important to remember those who have given up their lives in sacrifice for other. There's something unmatched with that.”

The ceremony honored the memory of 49 law enforcement officers from the region who died serving their community.

Wellumson also says despite the dangers of the job, it’s worth it. He says, “It's not an easy job. Yet, at the same time I would choose no other job in the world. “

That selfless service can take a toll on law enforcement families, keynote speaker Sheriff Bruce Daniels says events like this can provide comfort. Daniels says, “I think it helps family, whether they're suffering a loss or just supporting their loved ones that are active in law enforcement. I think it helps them deal with the rigors of every day family life, related to law enforcement."

Daniels also say it’s not just about those who gave the ultimate sacrifice, “"It was a great opportunity for me to memorialize those that we've lost and also celebrate our officers that have been injured, survived and returned to service.

There are over 250 law enforcement officers being honored in Wisconsin and over 20,000 nationally this week as President John F. Kennedy designated this week “Police Week” back in 1962.

Law enforcement from across the area encourages everyone to join them in honoring officers who lost their lives in the line of duty.

The Northwest Wisconsin Regional Law Enforcement Memorial is at 10 a.m. Wednesday at The Florian Gardens in Eau Claire. Officers will honor the memory of 49 officers from 20 counties who were killed in the line of duty. They will also recognize officers from across the country who lost their lives.

A procession of emergency vehicles will go from the Chippewa Valley Technical College Emergency Services Center to the Florian Gardens. It will go along Clairemont Avenue and State Highway 93. The procession leaves CVTC at 9 a.m.
