JIM FALLS, Wis. (WEAU)-- A family is picking up the pieces after their home was consumed by flames.
The Anson Fire Chief says an early morning fire on 200th Street in Jim Falls was likely caused by a lightning strike. He says crews were able to get to the scene within minutes but it was too late to save most of the family's home.
It was a loud crack of thunder and a flash of lightning that woke Tom Razer and his wife up early Thursday morning.
“I would have went back to sleep but my wife told me the lights went out and she told me to check and see if the neighbors lights were out,” Tom Razer said.
In the wee hours of the morning that commotion led Razer to find flames burning through the walls on his house.
“I got in the other room and the whole side of the house was orange to the curtains so I just started yelling,” he said.
In a couple of minutes his son and wife were able to get to safety while the flames grew, but there was still one member of the family that was nowhere to be found.
“We were trying to call the cat calling Mimi,” he said.
After four hours of crews battling the flames the family thought their smallest member might not make it out of the rubble.
“I heard the faintest meow, so I thought I am hearing something and I found her a couple minutes later. She must have been in a part of the house that didn't get hot,” Razer said.
The family says with the help of a church group they were able to recover a lot of heirlooms from the house but there are still plenty of things left behind that they can’t get back.
“My aunt and uncle are wonderful,l kind, loved people that are hard workers. Nobody deserves for this to happen but they would be the last people that deserve it,” niece Amanda Radle said.
For now the family says they'll be staying at an area hotel but in the weeks ahead they'll have a lot of decisions to make.
