Little power, but many candidates for Wis. offices

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- The Assembly is scheduled to vote Tuesday on a constitutional amendment that could make Wisconsin one of five states that don't have a treasurer.

Plans to abolish the secretary of state also have support in the Republican-controlled Legislature, but Republican Rep. Michael Schraa, of Oshkosh, says he wants to address the positions separately.

Lawmakers have tried for six consecutive years to have the two offices taken off the books. This year, Schraa is sponsoring a constitutional amendment that would begin the process of eliminating only the treasurer.

Voters have final say on removing positions from the state constitution. Schraa's proposal must pass two consecutive legislative sessions and a referendum before the positions could be eliminated. The earliest would be January 2019.
