COMMUNITY FIRST: Local businessman honored at VFW convention

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (WEAU) -- A local businessman recently was honored with the Veterans of Foreign Wars Citizenship Award.

Mike DeRosa, who owns many local Burger King franchises, received the award at the 115th VFW National Convention in Missouri on Tuesday. DeRosa's efforts have led to Burger King restaurants raising $2,600,000 for the VFW Foundation's Unmet Needs program. It serves families of deployed military men and women, and offers grants for their emergency expenses. A news release says Burger King is now the biggest supporter of the Unmet Needs program because of DeRosa's work.

Vice President Joe Biden appeared at the convention, but DeRosa said their paths didn't cross. The convention also includes an election of new leadership, and approval of resolutions to support veterans and military support programs.
