LA CROSSE, Wis (WEAU)- Hurricane Sandy hit land Monday afternoon and has started to wreak havoc across the northeast. Thousands have lost power, streets have flooded, and the winds got up to crushing speeds.

Already disaster teams are have deployed to the coast to help those in need, and more will soon be on their way.

The Red Cross has already been sending volunteers from all over Wisconsin to the coast. A second deployment will go as soon as the airports open up; Joyce Hagen-Beyer from Black River Falls will be one of those volunteers going.

“This is my first deployment” said Hagen-Beyer, “after I retired I felt so left behind so this is a good opportunity to go and help those in need.”

Hagen-Beyer made sure to pack her Packer logo sweatshirt to keep warm and let everyone know where she‘s from. She will be gone a total of two weeks. She says she will miss her husband and four dogs, but knows her skills as a nurse will be used.

“I watch the news and hear about the fires, the people displaced, the babies having nurses pumping their little hearts to keep them alive and I know I have to go,” said Hagen-Beyer.

More than 60 million people across the eastern United States have been affected by the storm. Both the Red Cross and the Salvation Army have disaster teams deployed.

“The salvation army is already out and feeding people with their mobile kitchens. They are all over the place in 11 states right now,” said Salvation Army Officer, Major Paul Moore.

Both the Red Cross and Salvation Army are asking for money donations. Money can be pledged on either of their websites, by phone, or you can text a $10 dollar donation.

“A lot are in need and there are more as the days go by,” said Hagen-Beyer.
