EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (WEAU) -- Staying fit and healthy seems to be one of the most popular New Year’s resolutions. But many have a hard time keeping up with their set goals.
New Year is just like getting a fresh start, so many people celebrate by making new commitments to healthier diets and exercising, in the spur of the moment, and without really thinking it through.
Local dietitians and trainers agree-going in with a plan is the way to avoid becoming a new year's "reso-loser"
"My perpetual new year's resolution seems to be to lose weigh and be healthier,” said Gold’s Gym Member Karla Svedarsky.
“What we see in general when the New Year rolls around, is probably the most common New Year's resolutions: I'm going to start exercising; I'm going to start eating healthier; and I'm going to lose weight,” said Registered Dietitian with the Mayo Clinic Health System Diane Dressel.
“Usually right away after New Year's, even a little before the New Year’s, sometime people are ready to get back into the gym and get started with those New Year's resolutions,” said Personal Trainer at Gold’s Gym, Ashley Fedie.
But with New Year’s excitement in the air, many go about their goals the wrong way.
“Sometimes people get really excited, I want to start exercising and do a lot of other great things, and they try to do too much too fast, then they get burnt out really quickly,” said Fedie.
Specialists say exercise is important for a healthy life style, but you have to get rid of the holiday fudge that might be hanging around, if you want to see big changes.
“Eighty percent of the weight loss is on the food side, not the exercise side; you can’t over-exercise a bad diet,” said Dressel.
“You should have that long term goal in mind, but then set up those stepping stones to get there,” said Fedie.
Experts agree: it takes a lifestyle change to reach some of those popular New Year's resolutions.
“it's going to take a lot more than just one things here and there, it's a lifestyle change that you really have to make,” said Fedie.
Dressel also mentioned to not get discouraged if you fall off the wagon. Just take a look at what you can do to make sure it doesn't happen again and get back on that horse.
