Man escapes burning car in Viroqua

VIROQUA, Wis. (WEAU) -- A Viroqua man escaped serious injury, after flames shot through the floorboard and dashboard of his vehicle Sunday night.

The Vernon County Sheriff's Office says it happened around 5:46 on N. Asbury Rd in the Town of Viroqua. Deputies say 77-year-old Joseph B. Menne of rural Viroqua, was eastbound on N. Asbury Rd when he heard a loud bang and saw flames.

The flames hit him in the face and burned some of his hair, but Menne complained of no injuries and refused medical treatment.

Investigators say he was not wearing his seatbelt. The vehicle was fully engulfed in flames when the Viroqua Fire Department arrived. Assisting the Vernon County Sheriff’s Office was the Viroqua Fire Department.

The accident remains under investigation by the Vernon County Sheriff’s Office.
