MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- Authorities say a fence rail that impaled a man involved in a car crash in Madison has been surgically removed at University Hospital.

Fire officials say a car left a residential street Wednesday night, ran over several bushes and a chain link fence and crashed into a utility pole. As the car plowed through the fence, a 7-foot section of the 2-inch upper rail penetrated the windshield of the car and speared a 20-year-old man who was a passenger in the front seat.

The pipe impaled the man just below his left arm pit and exited through his back.

Fire officials say the man was conscious and talking as they used a hydraulic tool to trim the pipe and carefully remove him from the vehicle. Authorities say the man is expected to recover.
