Man sentenced for stealing church donations

CHIPPEWA FALLS, Wis. (AP) -- A man will spend extra time in prison for stealing money donated during Christmas services at a Chippewa Falls church nearly two years ago.

A judge on Thursday sentenced 40-year-old Kurt Meyer to 15 months in prison. The sentence will run consecutive to a sentence Meyer already is serving, meaning he'll remain behind bars for five years.

Meyer will be on two years of extended supervision after he gets out of prison. He also must pay $6,000 in restitution to St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church.

Meyer pleaded no contest in Chippewa County Court last week to stealing between $6,000 and $14,000 from the church. The stolen cash included a donation for an orphanage in Peru.

Reports say Meyer told the court he made a "poor decision" and apologized.
