Mayors make sandwiches for hungry children

(WEAU) - Both the mayors of La Crosse and Onalaska took a step down from their offices Tuesday to help those in need.

Mayor Matt Harter and Mayor Joe Chilsen were at the Salvation Army Tuesday morning making sandwiches for the Feed the Kids program. The mayors helped make almost 400 brown bag lunches that were handed out just hours later to needy kids in La Crosse and Onalaska.

La Crosse Mayor Matt Harter said "It's a good thing and a good opportunity for us to give back to a community that has given a lot to us." Onalaska Mayor Joe Chilson added "This is just solving a basic need. Hungry children…that should never be a problem for us. We should solve that at any opportunity we can."

The Salvation Army is looking for things like peanut butter, fruit cups, granola bars, and sandwich bags. All items can be donated at the Salvation Army center on 8th St.
