Meeting to be held on Detroit-to-Wisconsin trail

MARQUETTE, Mich. (AP) -- A meeting is planned for later this month to discuss an initiative being pushed by Gov. Rick Snyder to create a hiking and biking trail that would stretch from Belle Isle park in Detroit to Ironwood on the Wisconsin boundary in the western Upper Peninsula.

The Mining Journal reports the trails summit will be held March 18 at Northern Michigan University's Bottum University Center.

Snyder made the proposal in November, saying he wanted Michigan to become the Trail State.

The governor directed the Michigan Department of Natural Resources to work with private and nonprofit partners to make the full route a reality. The project would require more than 200 miles of new trails.

DNR Director Keith Creagh says preliminary work on developing the trail is under way.
