Melrose man suspected in Menomonie hit-and-run; on-duty officers injured

MENOMONIE, Wis. (MENOMONIE POLICE DEPARTMENT NEWS RELEASE) -- On September 2, 2014 at approximately 1:14 AM Menomonie Police Department Officers Daniel Westlund and Maloree Switlick were on bicycle patrol duty at the intersection of 6th Street East at 14th Avenue in the City of Menomonie when they were struck by a motorist. The motorist fled the scene of the accident. During the incident Officer Switlick was able to view the motorist’s license plate. Through investigation the operator of the vehicle was identified as Jacob Bruce Nordstrom (20 years of age) and he was located at 1821 South Broadway in the City of Menomonie. Jacob Bruce Nordstrom was subsequently arrested and taken to the Dunn County Jail for the following recommended charges:

1. Violate Absolute Sobriety Law 346.63(2m)
2. Cause Injury By Intoxicated Operation of Vehicle – Count 1 346.63(2)
3. Hit & Run Causing Injury 346.67(1)
4. Cause Injury By Intoxicated Operation of Vehicle – Count 2 346.63(2)
5. Operating a Motor Vehicle While Under the Influence 1st Offense 346.63(1)(a)
6. Underage Consumption of Alcohol – 1st Violation 125.07(4)(b)

Officers Westlund and Switlick were transported to the Red Cedar Mayo Emergency Room in the City of Menomonie. They were treated and released for non-life threatening injuries sustained during the hit and run accident. Both officers are on injury leave and there is not a timetable for their return to active duty.

This incident is still under investigation by the Dunn County Sheriff’s Office and questions regarding the investigation should be directed to the Dunn County Sheriff’s Office.

The Menomonie Police Department was assisted by the Dunn County Sheriff’s Office, Wisconsin State Patrol, Menomonie Fire/Rescue Department and the UW-Stout Police Department.

Also, a special thank you goes out to the UW-Stout students who came to the aid of the Menomonie Police Department during our time of need. Their help was greatly appreciated.
