Millions of dollars in green energy grants unused

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- Millions of dollars in federal grants and loans for property owners in Madison, Milwaukee and Racine are still unused more than two years into a program to help homes and businesses become energy efficient.

The Wisconsin State Journal reports (http://bit.ly/Ut9VIx ) Sunday that the three cities shared in the $20 million program, which was funded by federal stimulus funds from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.

More than 500 homeowners and about 100 businesses have received green updates, but in all, only about $3.16 million in grants and $1 million in low-interest loans have been awarded as of late October.

There are seven months left in the program. After that, unused money must go back to the federal government.
