MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- Wisconsin's top elections official says Milwaukee election workers did not initially check those who registered to vote against a list of felons ineligible to vote.

Government Accountability Board director Kevin Kennedy said during the board's meeting Tuesday that the problem was caught and corrected. Kennedy says Milwaukee election officials were going to retroactively check those who registered earlier in the day before the mistake was found.

Kennedy says the GAB told the Milwaukee Election Commission where it could find the list online on the board's website to perform the check. State law does not allow felons under state supervision to register to vote.

Monday marked the start of in-person early voting in Wisconsin.

The state Republican Party says it is asking for names of those who voted Monday in Milwaukee.
