PRESS RELEASE (MONROE CO. SHERIFF'S DEPT.):

The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office is reporting information of a possible scam. The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office received information of people calling and identifying themselves as computer experts. They tell people that they have received information that their computer is infected. Their goal is to get you to let them remote log into your computer (s) and then they can get personal information and they can install malicious software.

This notice is an attempt to make the public aware of people trying to scam and possibly hack into your computers. Also, as in the past, the Sheriff’s Office would like to remind the public that with income tax season here to be cognitive of who they share their personal information with. Scammers know people are getting their income tax refunds back (these scammers can be in the United States or Foreign Countries). The calls for scammers seem to be more frequent around this time of the year.

Again, if you don’t know who you are talking too and someone wants yon to give them your personal information, account number, codes, etc. be cautious as it may be a scam. This office has also received calls about someone calling (it’s usually a voice message playing when they call) your cell phone saying that you have a $44.00 credit and to log onto a web site to get the credit. The phone number that comes up is to your cell phone provider. When the people call their cell phone providers to confirm this they have discovered that it is not true. (Do make your cell phone provider aware if this happens to you)

Be aware of mail and internet emails that claim you have won money and you need to pay a percentage to claim your winnings first. These are generally scams, especially if they want you to wire (send) them money to a Western Union address, etc.

If you have received calls like this you can report them to www.ic3.gov and the FCC (for phone and internet crimes), and the US Postal Service (if it’s a mail scam). If yon have any questions on these kinds of issues please call the Sheriff’s Office (608) 269-2117.
