CHIPPEWA FALLS, Wis. (WEAU) - Have you ever taken your kids the chiropractor?
It’s a trend some local chiropractors are seeing in kids and pregnant moms.
"Elin started being adjusted after 3 or 4 days old right away. Kiara was actually 6 months old when we started seeing a chiropractor for her,” said Libby Leinenkugel of Chippewa Falls.
Libby Leinenkugel has been taking her two daughters to cook chiropractic in Chippewa falls for the past few years.
So I decided to see Dr. Cook to find out why.
"A lot of times people will start in the office with symptoms with their kids whether its chronic ear infections or just chronic sinus problems,” said Dr. Lona Cook, Chiropractor at Cook’s Chiropractic.
Dr. Lona says when patients come in, they'll place their body on this table and she'll work on their alignment from toe to head."
"We're looking to see proper movement in each segment of the spine and that's what protecting the nerves that come out of the spine,” said Cook.
Libby says after a few weekly visits, she noticed a change in Kiara right away.
"When Kiara was little, to now you know we were in the pediatrician’s office three times a month with ear infections or whatever it was, but now we go in once a year,” said Leinenkugel.
"The nerve system and the spinal nerves that’s what controls the function of the cells , so we don't want the spine to be putting pressure on any of those nerves, we want the body to do what it needs to do to heal itself,” said Cook.
Now when Libby's kids get sick, she says its only for a few days.
"It’s so gentle it’s almost like the pressure you would put on a tomato to dent it, that's the pressure that's used,” said Cook.
But Libby says her trip to the chiropractor started before she had kids. Due to a hip problem she had while running.
She even came in when she was pregnant.
"I was a week overdue, with Elin and I came into see Dr. Lona and within two days, she was born,” said Leinenkugel.
"The spinal development of the baby while it’s in the mom’s tummy and obviously if the baby is positioned correctly that is betters the baby developing the mom,” said Cook.
"We might not be able to feel it right now, but overall and long terms we know were doing really good things for our bodies,” said Leinenkugel.
Dr. Cook said children can come in at any age.
Mayo Clinic Health System says on their website that chiropractic care is safe, when done by someone trained and complications are rare.
But, it also says you shouldn't go for chiropractic care if you have cancer in your spine or an increased risk of stroke. Click below to find out more of when you should not go to Chiropractor.
