In May, the Eau Claire County Board also voted to change its ordinance to restrict the use of e-cigarettes within 25 feet of county buildings.
EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (WEAU) -- A change is in the works for the City of Eau Claire when it comes to smoking electronic cigarettes.
On Tuesday night, the Eau Claire City Council voted to change its smoking ordinance, and ban the use of e-cigarettes within 25 feet of city buildings. In a 9-1 vote, the council voted to change the city's current smoking ordinance. City council member Kathy Mitchell, who introduced the new ordinance, says research hasn't shown what effect the vapors from e-cigs can have. So, she said it's better to err on the side of caution, and ban the use of e-cigarettes from areas like city-owned buildings, city buses, and public schools.
The city's new rules will not go into effect until later this month.
