NEW INFORMATION: Empty Bowls event in Eau Claire has record success

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (WEAU) -- An annual event benefiting Feed My People Food Bank this week was a record-setter.

More than 1,900 people turned out for the Empty Bowls event Thursday at Florian Gardens in Eau Claire. It brought in more than $53,000 for the agency's hunger-relief efforts. Both figures were the highest in the event's 14-year history. More than 200 volunteers helped out at the event. Executive Director Emily Moore says that also may have been a record. Several area restaurants donated a total of 260 gallons of soup for the event.

Moore says the event was so successful because of the weather, great publicity before the event, and because people knew there was more space at Florian Gardens. The event was held at Trinity Lutheran Church for 11 years before moving to Florian Gardens in 2013. She says there is room for twice as many chairs at Florian Gardens.
