PRAIRIE DU CHIEN, Wis. (CRAWFORD COUNTY SHERIFF'S OFFICE NEWS RELEASE) -- On March 11 we reported the suspected murder- suicide in rural Clayton Township. An autopsy was completed on both individuals involved. Preliminary autopsy results along with the evidence gathered at the scene confirmed what investigators initially felt happened.

On March 10 sometime in midafternoon Robert J. Reagan age 70 entered his wife’s bedroom where she was in bed. Robert shot and killed his wife Karen M Reagan age 68 with a single gunshot wound to the head. It appeared that she may have been asleep when she was killed but we will never know for sure if she was sleeping or awake, said Crawford County Sheriff Dale McCullick. At some point after killing his wife, Robert walked out to his driveway and shot and killed himself with a single self-inflicted gunshot to the head with a .357 caliber revolver. It is presumed that the .357 revolver is the same gun Robert used to kill his wife but we need to wait for ballistics testing to say that for sure, added Sheriff McCullick.

The couple have lived together in their rural Crawford County home for many years and recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. Friends and family describe the couple as loving and having a good relationship.

We are looking into the possibility that Karen had recently received some troubling news regarding her health and that’s why this tragic event occurred said, Sheriff McCullick. Friends of the couple told us that Robert had stated that he couldn’t live if anything ever happened to Karen.

The investigation continues.
