NEILLSVILLE, Wis. (WEAU)-- A Neillsville Police Officer has been cleared in a shooting that killed a man in Clark County.

Investigators say Officer Aaron Bembnister shot and killed 23-year-old Ricky Taylor on December 13th at a home in Neillsville. Bembnister had responded to a report of a man who was intoxicated and had a knife at 1009 Grand Avenue.

Investigators say when Bembnister got to the home, he was confronted by Taylor, who was holding a large kitchen knife. The report says Taylor was told several times to drop the knife, and that Taylor refused and continued to come at the officer. Bembnister told investigators he was fearful for his life and the safety of others and fired his gun, hitting Taylor.

An investigation by the Clark County Sheriff’s Department, District Attorney's Office, and the Wisconsin Department of Justice-Division of Criminal Investigation concluded that Officer Bembnister's actions were justified, and that he did not commit a crime.

Autopsy results show Taylor died of gunshot wounds to the torso. A toxicology report shows he had a blood alcohol level of .198.
