BARRON, Wis. (WEAU) -- A judge has ordered the man convicted of a homicide charge in a deadly crash to spend 6 1/2 years in prison.
The sentencing hearing for Wade Richey, 23, of Spooner was Wednesday in Barron. Court records show that Richey was convicted of Homicide by Vehicle With the Use of a Controlled Substance and Reckless Driving-Causing Great Bodily Harm during a trial in February. The crash happened north of Cumberland in July 2012. The Barron County Sheriff's Department said a truck Richey was driving didn't stop at a stop sign, went in a ditch, and then hit an embankment. Triston Sager, 15, of Birchwood was in the box area of the truck. He went to the hospital, where he later died. Deputies said Richey initially told them that the truck malfunctioned.
Richey had pleaded not guilty to both charges in August 2012.
