EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (RELEASE FROM EAU CLAIRE POLICE DEPT.)-- On Thursday, August 7, 2014, at 7:06 PM, the Eau Claire Police Department and Eau Claire Fire / EMS were dispatched to a one vehicle crash in the parking lot on the east side of Memorial High School. Upon arrival officers observed an unconscious 17 year old male lying in the parking lot, bleeding from his head. An unoccupied Kia minivan was stopped near the injured male with the driver’s door standing open. The driver of the van was identified as a 16 year old male.
Witnesses indicate that the two juveniles exited Memorial High School and approached the van, upon which one male got into the driver’s seat while the other male “jumped” onto the hood of the van. The male on the hood was seated facing forward on the passenger side of the hood. The driver pulled forward from a parked position and turned left traveling E/B through the lot towards Fairfax St. The driver estimates he accelerated to approximately 30-35 mph when he saw the rider losing his balance. The driver tried to slow down gradually but the rider fell off going under the passenger side of the van. The driver felt the van drive over the rider and he immediately stopped to render aid.
The Eau Claire Police Department Crash Reconstruction Team collected physical evidence and diagramed the scene which has confirmed the statement of the driver and several witnesses; however, the actual speed of the vehicle has not yet been determined.
The injured male is recovering from serious injuries. This case is still under investigation by the Eau Claire Police Department. Upon completion, this case will be forwarded to the Eau Claire County District Attorney’s Office for review, which is normal protocol in these types of cases.
