LA CROSSE, Wis. (WEAU) -- We're learning more about what led up to the arrest of the man accused of killing a taxi driver.

Timmy Johnson Jr., 25, of Platteville remains in the La Crosse County Jail. Bond was set at $500,000 cash on Monday. Officers found the driver, Merle Forbes, 79, in the trunk of his cab after Johnson led them on a chase through La Crosse County. It ended in a crash. Johnson is accused of robbing and stabbing Forbes to death last Thursday. That was hours after Johnson was released from jail.

Last August, Forbes reportedly picked up Johnson in Darlington, and took him to Boscobel. Court records show that Johnson told Forbes he needed to get the $90 fare from an apartment. He never came back with the money. Forbes called police.

Johnson has not been formally charged.
