MILWAUKEE (AP) -- Visitors to two national parks in Wisconsin spent $28.4 million in surrounding communities in 2012.

That's according to a new National Park Service report.

It shows that nearly 274,000 people visited Apostle Islands National Lakeshore in Bayfield and Saint Croix National Scenic Riverway in St. Croix Falls in 2012.

The report says those visitors spend $28.4 million in the surrounding communities within 60 miles and supported 442 jobs in the state.

The bulk of it was at the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore. The more than 163,000 visitors in 2012 spent more than $24 million in communities surrounding the park.

Nationally, the National Park Service says 283 million tourists to the parks spent $14.7 billion in nearby communities.
