New La Crosse Chief of Police: Ron Tischer

LA CROSSE, Wis (WEAU)- The new chief of police for the city of La Crosse has stepped into office. Ron Tischer is the 17th chief in the city’s history, and he is beginning at a time when there is a lot of hard work to be done in the department. Investigators are still trying to solve the Petras double homicide that happened 2 weeks ago, and Oktoberfest weekend starts Friday.

“It’s an exciting time, and something I have been striving for my whole career to aspire to. Once they told me the good news my family and I were very excited,” said Tischer.

Tischer was a captain at the police department in Waukesha before he came to La Crosse and has been an officer for 18 years. Tischer acknowledges the challenges he will have beginning his new position, but says he is ready to take the challenge.

Captain Lawrence will take Chief Tischer under his wing for the first couple days helping him get to know his duties better.

“The first days he will be working with officers spending time with the three of us Captains on the street,” said Captain Lawrence.

Tischer will be patrolling the streets during Oktoberfest, getting to know the community better and his fellow officers better.

Tischer does have plans on making some small changes to the department already. One of his main goal while Chief is to bring the community and department closer together against crime.

“I definitely see me bringing the community and department to the next level of community policing. I believe strongly in it, and there are new ideas out there than we can institute in the city,” said Tischer.

Interim Chief Robert Abraham will now be the assistant chief. Abraham also applied for the chief position when it first opened, but Tischer says he thinks they’ll work together well.

“I think we’ll compliment each other. I talk to Abraham on a daily basis and he keeps me intuitive with what’s been going on the past couple weeks,” said Tischer.
